January 2012
Welcome to the New Year! I hope that everyone has a splendid holiday with lots of fun and creating. We are planning a creative year with wonderful workshops for the mixed medium fan, starting this month with a workshop on creating the Altered Book/art journal. In this workshop you will take a book from the recycle bin and upcycle it into a beautiful work of art and art journal. Several techniques as well as how to’s will be involved. The artist who is assisting in this journey is Darlene Samuel, me. So be prepared for some fun. Invite a friend. A list of supplies will be on the website or you can call or email me.
On a sadder note, we lost one of our members this year. Bea Hummel lost her battle with cancer and will be missed. She was a fiber artist and a sweet soul.

Santa Rosa Art Association meeting and workshop is January 28, 2012. The meeting starts at 9:00am with the workshop following around 10:30am. We meet at the Milton Campus of Pensacola State College, in room 4902, near the student center.
Santa Rosa Art Association’s workshop this month is “The Altered Book, Fun and Functional”. This workshop will feature how to start an altered book and several techniques to use in the process. You can find a list of supplies on the website. There is a small fee for participating in the workshop. For more information: call Paula Knauber 850-995-9717 or Darlene Samuel at 994-4070.
Tools and Supplies for Altered Book workshop:
Scissors: paper cutting (can bring fancy cut, if so desire)
Paint brushes for wet techniques (not your best!)
Glue: I prefer Aleene’s Fast Grab Tacky or just plain Tacky
Paint: liquid acrylic (the cheap stuff in colors you like)*
Book to be altered: make sure it is not too large in dimensions or thickness, make sure the pages are not brittle (don’t use a really old book as the pages are too dry)
Bull dog clips*
Xacto Knife or craft knife with mat*
Collage images and papers*
3-d embellishments
Fibers and beads*
And anything you might want to incorporate into your journal
* I will provide a selection for the starred items. I will also bring glue, paintbrushes, craft knives, wax paper, and few other items to be used. The cost for this workshop will be $5.00 to cover the cost of these supplies.
February 25, 2012 workshop
Mary Richardson is the guest artist and she will be teaching
two different books if time permits
TAG FLAG BOOK Supply List
2 pieces Davey/tag/chip board, 5 ½ “ square
2 pieces cover paper, 7 1/2 “ square
2 pieces cover paper, 5” square
1 piece heavy paper, 24” x 5 ½”
14 fibers/yarns/narrow ribbons, each 15” long
12 manilla shipping tags
Supplies
Hole punching template (provided)
Glue stick
Scissors
Needle punch/awl
Large eye yarn needle or small size crochet hook (used to pull the yarns through the small hole in spine)
Assorted ink pads (at least three different/coordinating colors)
Paper cutter (only if your paper isn’t already cut to sizes listed above)
Optional embellishments of your choice
NOTES: This is a technique class. You choose your own colors/theme/embellishments, etc. In my sample book, I used a 5” square tag board…a mistake that fortunately still worked for the size of my tags. Because I didn’t have any 24” wide paper and didn’t want to order any, I used some brown shipping paper that comes on a roll and stamped it for the 24” by 5” piece. It is important for the inside of the covers to be sturdy…if you can’t get tag/chip board, glue together two or more layers of thin cardboard such as cereal boxes; let dry under something heavy; then cut to size. Try to have paper, fibers, etc precut; it will help you be able to finish up within the class time.

The Santa Rosa Art Association, Inc. was established in Milton, Florida, (Santa Rosa County) over 40 years ago to encourage, educate and inspire artists and art lovers in Northwest Florida. We provide workshops, art showcases, and networking for our members. In return, we ask that members remain active by attending most of our twelve monthly meetings, working on committees, and sharing their talents.
We encourage and support each other’s art efforts and provide workshops to encourage our members to explore various art media. Members and Guest Artists may be invited to teach a workshop, for which the instructor receives a stipend. We also display member art in other local shows and at special locations as a group or individuals. Occasional optional field trips for members may also be organized.
We strive to support the art in our community. SRAA uses funds raised during the year to promote art education through our Art Benefactors and Art Grants programs. We provide art workshops every month on the fourth Saturday of the month. These are held in building 4900 on the Milton campus of PJC/University of Florida in room 4902, from 9:30 to 12:30 after our regular scheduled meetings. Our meetings start at 9 am.
